Frieda Belinfante (* 10.05.1904 in Amsterdam; † 05.03.1995 in Santa Fe, New Mexico) was a Dutch-American cellist, conductor and a member of the resistance against National Socialism.
The German occupation of the Netherlands by the Wehrmacht in 1940 forced Frieda, who was targeted by the racial laws as a "Half-Jewess", to dissolve her orchestra and to go into the resistance. She began to falsify identity documents by herself. That's how she came into contact with Willem Arondeus and became a member of the resistance group PBS, who falsified more documents. In order to destroy the duplicates of the original passports at the registration office, Frieda, Willem and other members of the PBS planned a bomb attack. Frieda was excluded from the operational attack group because no women were allowed there.
After the attack, the majority of the members of the resistance group were arrested and killed. Frieda Belinfante disguised herself as a man for a few months to avoid getting detained. At the end of 1943, she managed to escape to Switzerland and was then housed in a refugee camp.
We and the »Zentrum für Politische Schönheit«, wanted to put a focus on this courage as well as a humanistic action which is always right and dedicate a commemorative coin to these members of the resistance. The coin is given to all the accomplices who have been supporting the ZPS for several years and thanks them for their accomplishments towards a militant humanism.
